A Sake and Salt Bath: A Cozy Way to Stay Warm on Cold Days

It’s been so cold lately—just the kind of weather that makes you want to soak in a nice, warm bath.

Recently, I’ve become hooked on taking baths with sake and salt.

Both sake and salt have traditionally been used for purification in Japan.

Soaking in a bath with both feels like it could give your body and mind a powerful refresh.

At our house, we usually set the bath water to 42°C (108°F) in winter. But after my family has taken their baths, the water has cooled down, so I usually reheat it.

However, when I add sake and salt, even if the water feels a little lukewarm at first, I gradually start to feel pleasantly warm from the inside out. There’s no need to reheat the bath.

It really warms me all the way to my core.

As for how much to use, I add about one or two small sake cups of sake and a handful of salt.

I came across an article online saying that salt can cause rust if it gets into the bath heater, so I turn off the automatic heating function and don’t reheat the bath while the salt is in it.

After taking a bath, I rinse the bathtub thoroughly with the shower.

Another thing I love is that warming up from the inside out helps me ease into sleep more smoothly.

I’ve really come to love this bath!
