Even Natural Snacks Deserve a Second Look: Why I Don’t Choose Food Based on “Healthy” Labels Alone

The city is full of temptations.

If I walk around town when I’m hungry, I’m pretty sure I’ll end up stopping for something!

And I’m especially weak when it comes to “natural” snacks that seem gentle and healthy…

I love simple snacks that let you really taste the ingredients.

Words like:

  • “Carefully selected ingredients”
  • “No food additives”
  • “Handmade”
  • “No added sugar”

make me feel reassured, and sometimes I end up eating more than I intended…

Dried sweet potatoes, dried fruit, and nuts all seem so natural and wholesome.

But apparently, the sugar content of today’s sweet potatoes and fruits can be surprisingly high, making them not all that different from sweets.

I’ve even heard the comparison that the sugar content of a baked sweet potato can be similar to that of a cake.

Nuts are also often considered a healthy snack because they tend to have less of an immediate effect on blood sugar levels.

However, in my case, eating nuts sometimes makes my body itchy or leaves me feeling tired and sluggish.

Apparently, nuts can be relatively common allergy triggers, and there may also be concerns about contamination with mold.

I loved them because they were so filling, though…

I’ve also tried snack bars made with superfoods or protein.

I thought they might be good for my health and beauty, but they didn’t agree with me, so I stopped eating them.

There were also times when I eagerly reached for sweets with no added sugar, especially those made with sweeteners such as agave syrup that are said to have less of an impact on blood sugar.

But I sometimes found myself feeling irritable afterward, or simply didn’t feel good physically, so I stopped eating them as well.

Natural snacks certainly have a healthy image, and there are many appealing products made carefully with high-quality ingredients.

Still, it seems wise to pay attention to how much sugar they contain and how much we actually eat.

At the end of the day, treats are still treats, aren’t they? 😊

I’d like to find a way to enjoy them without going overboard!

Thank you, as always, for reading! 😊
